UEFA has confirmed that Cardiff City Stadium has been chosen to host the 2014 Super Cup between the previous seasons’ Champions League and Europa League winners.
The game is the traditional curtain-raiser for a new year of European football and has been staged in Monaco since 1998.
From 2013, when the Super Cup will take place in Prague, the game will be played at a different stadium each year.
And Cardiff City’s plush new stadium will host the match in two years’ time, when it is expected to have been moved to mid-August due to the scrapping of that month’s international friendly date.
First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones said: “This is fantastic news and confirms once again how our capital city is in the ‘champions league’ itself when it comes to hosting world class sporting events.
“The European Super Cup will be a major boost to not only to the city, but also for the global profile of Wales.”
